Scanner Dreams

Here's an idea- use the scanner as a camera.......

Most people place the object to scan, or "document" flat on the glass, and the scanner's light bulb moves past it, recording what it reflects. Giving you a crisp, flat image.

Well,

Consider moving the "document" as the scanner's light bulb moves down the glass. The result is a distortion like this.....

Or consider bending the "document" so that it is not flat on the glass. The scanner has a depth of field, like a camera, so bending the paper makes the image go out of focus and darkens values.... cool!

like this...

To use the Design Class' scanner, just click the "Imagecapture" icon on the dock and set up the controls for colors, or greys, or even just black and white. You can also adjust the resolution to get effects.

Here's the icon.....

Here's the control panel of the scanner...

New Blog Work- TYPOGRAPHY

Your next challenge is to create a typography based posting on your blog......

• Convey a MESSAGE using type-based images only...
• Use and exploit the BLOG format (vertical scrolling)
• Use only images you create
or
• All sampled imagery must be "four steps away" from and original image (crop, color, filter, blur, etc.)
• Explore the use of a scanner, camera, phone, etc for developing images...

Check out this site as an interesting example: @ http://mfa.designcrit.com/thesis-candidacy-presentation/

SAM WEBER- layering images + textures

Weber's work combines his skill at drawing with Photoshop's filters and coloring abilities. He goes back and forth to build layers of subtle color and TEXTURE....

• Notice how strong his use of SPACE and negative space is too....

Folding Project Posting

When you complete your folded design, post info and images about it on your blog.

• Post three images describing it visually ( detail photos as well as overview shots).

• Explain what your theme was....

• Explain how your design RESPONDS to the folded structure, either enhancing it, or hiding it.

• Also post a title for your work...

for example:

This is "Shadid".
I  chose to work with the theme of a reporter killed while working on a story about Syria.
The structure uses images of Shadid's face with scenes of street fighting.
The colors are greens and reds- complements to create a more violent emotional effect.
I used the filters: "posterize" and "mezotint" to build visual texture.

I left  Shadid's eye visible as a "clue" that his image hiding in the chaos of textures and patterns.

The shifting colors (from red to greens) adds to, or enhances the folded structure by changing (dramatically) along the fold lines.

RICHARD SWEENEY folding art

He's great a pushing the limits of a simple technique! Take a look at Sweeney's paper folding work, but also notice how those ideas carried over into his metal and cardboard work.

Inspiration...

We talked about him before, but check out Kellerhouse inc.

Great use of visuals to match a mood....

Here's the link: kellerhouse.com

Blog work... Pictures tell a story

Here's the first of a series of blog based projects...

GATHER  5 images that are examples of designers using a dominant IMAGE to tell a story (or make you feel a mood).

Post them to your blog, write the word they associate with below them, and describe how it evokes the mood.
Please write the designer's name too...

Consider how designers use: Cropping, blur (sharp or soft focus), color, irony,  and even the camera angle...

Here is an example to get you going:

This is a poster for the movie "The American" designed by Kellerhouse inc.  The poster uses a "chopped" image to create a feeling of drama, violence and energy. Notice that the broken area is on a DIAGONAL- a more active line than a horizontal line.....

The camera angle looks like you are lower than the figure, adding to the drama because the action is rushing away from you!

Also the image is black on an empty background with the glow to lead you to see his gun and head....

CREATIVITY Exercise!!

Your job is to design

- use imagery, text, lines, values, colors, etc to decorate the pattern THEN fold it into a shape!!

Your design should RESPOND to the folded form.... reacting to the surface and how light hits it...

Here are the patterns... pick the one you want to work with...

Creativity Questions

How does your design enhance the surface of the folded form? Does it HIDE the form, or ENHANCE the surface?

How would you describe the designs you used? Organic, mechanical, symbolic or photographic?

Here's a series of videos demonstrating some of the folding techniques in the book!

LETS BLOG!!!!

Let's create your blogs for use in the class.... here are directions

-->
BLOGGING
*You are making a blog to use for the class. All postings and images used in your blog should be appropriate for use in school AND should follow Academy standards for technology use.

1. Go to www.blogger.com and click on the orange button that says "create a blog".
2. Follow the prompts. You should be able to sign in using your WA email address and a password. Write down the password- hang on to it! J
When creating a display name do NOT use your first AND last name (you could use initials or first, last only), and whatever else it asks for. It might ask to send you a text message, then send you a code, and you'll enter the code online. Now you have an account.

3. Name your blog...keep the web address something you'll remember and the name something responsible.
4. Follow the prompt to choose a template you like the look of. You can always change it later if you want by clicking on the design tab.

5. Click the orange button that says start blogging and you will be brought to the page where you write your posts...but first, let's adjust some of the settings...

6. Click on the settings tab up above.
·       Then click on the formatting tab and make sure you have the time set to the eastern time zone. Scroll down to the bottom and click save.
·       Then click on the posts and comments tab, set it up as shown here.... add other class members emails as registered users and enter your email address next to comment notification email. This way you'll be emailed when a post receives a comment.

Click save.

7. Click on the design tab.
·       On the right side click on add a gadget. A menu will pop up. Scroll down to labels. Click on the blue plus sign and click save.
·       Hint: This is also the tab where colors and fonts live if you want to change them (under template designer).
·       Also, in gadgets, delete the “about me” gadget. Do not put personal info on the blog.

8. Click on the view blog tab to see how it looks. You can play with the look of the blog by clicking on the design tab.

9. In the top right corner you should see “new post”. Click on that and begin writing in the space provided. When answering questions from the class blog, match the post title in your response title.
·       Note: If you want to add a photo there is a button to do in the toolbar above the post. It looks like a little photograph.
·       Note: There IS spellcheck. It's located in the toolbar. Use it!
·       You have a choice when writing to save (for later) or post.

10. If you want to go back and edit posts later on...you can click on new post, then the edit posts tab. A menu of all your posts will appear and you can click on the one you want to edit.

DON'T FORGET TO EMAIL Mr. Powers A LINK (the URL) TO YOUR BLOG!

Send me your email and the password for your site. I reserve the right to remove any inappropriate postings from your site.

* Blogger is changing all the time. It's possible that you won't be able to follow these directions exactly.

If you get stuck, check with Mr. Powers

Great example of layered images...

Martin Woodtli is a Swiss designer famous for his intricate and obsessive style of poster design. His work uses a 4 to 5 color silkscreen process to create these beautiful posters. They are a wonderful example of giving the audience a "first impression", then luring them in to see more and more and MORE beautiful information.
