GETTING IDEAS - three designers..

Here are three designers who use the ELEMENTS and PRINCIPALS of art in unique ways to convey a message. Notice how their work often has more meaning than what you see on the "surface".

Dig in and explore their work:

Please collect three sample images of their work on your blog page, and answer these questions about them....

1. What is the dominant Element or Principal used in the sample you collected?

2. What is the "deeper meaning" you realize after investigating that artist's work?

THE ARTISTS

Shepard Fairey

The iconic grafitti artist who used the street to spread his message. Look how he adapts images from Communist propaganda, wrestling, pop culture or other "universal" images into his work....

See more of his work here@ http://www.obeygiant.com/industries

He is most famous for his "Andre the giant"  stickers and posters. An image taken from an early 80's pro wrestler's portrait...

Later work picked up on cultural patterns and symbols combined with short statements...

MILTON GLASER

Old school Design master!!! Most of his work is hand made...pre-computers! As a result, you see the "human" influence in his shapes, colors and marks.
Yes, he designed the "Dylan poster" and other icons of graphic design..

AESTHETIC APPARATUS

Great "punk rock" designers! They create posters using a mix of old and new- Silk screen printing + mod technology. Love their layered images and the VISUAL TEXTURE!!!

Scanner Dreams

Create an image that visually describes DEPTH and VISUAL TEXTURE, by scanning objects....including your face.

* manipulate the scanner's depth of field, by placing objects close and far from the glass.

* Manipulate the scanner's recording process, by MOVING the scanned objects as they are being scanned!

* Enhance the scanned image by using Photoshoop's "auto tone/contrast/color" tools...

Upload jpegs of your scans to your blog. and answer these questions about the work:

1. What is the mood of your image? Is it a result of: contrast, subject matter, depth of field or the figure to ground relationship?

2. What makes the illusion of depth? Value changes, edge quality, or size of objects?

Here are some examples of scans

Here is the result of using "auto tone" on the image above...
