Sam's Bag

The design relates to the logo and, ultimately, the word "inferno." The swirling hands drag the eye down into a firey, burning hole (hell).

Allison's Logo!

1. My word was evanescent and it means to soon pass out of sight, memory or existence.

2. To express the meaning of evanescent, my logo contains hearts with a dotted pattern fill, along with a drop shadow. The hearts gradually get small, from left to right, and as the hearts get smaller, the dots in the pattern fill also get smaller and less dots appear. The drop shadow below each heart also become less opaque with each heart.

Sol Lewitt Project

We are going to create a wall sized drawing made up of tiles..... You design a series of tiles based on the requirement list below..... then we will install them onto a numbered "grid".

Create an 8 by 8 inch area in Illustrator

Step 1. Fill the space with "harmonious lines", lines that are parallel or visually "fit" together... print it

Step 2. select a square PORTION of that drawing and enlarge the contents to 8X8 inches.... print it

Step 3. Tape up one of your drawings to the wall, outside our room.

Here are some examples of what the lines might look like:

Durer's sketch uses harmonious lines to describe form..

Now for the idea behind the project....

Here are a series of SOl Lewitt pieces. His work is based on an "Idea" or directions given to the gallery- then the artwork is recreated by others, following Lewitt's directions.

Madyson's logo

My word is Posthumous, and it means arising, occurring or happening after one's death.
My logo shows the shadow of death and the point of Heaven and Hell. The halo adds irony, and it also adds a sign on inspiration.

August-logo

1. My word is epicurean. Epicurean means to have luxurious tastes or habits, especially in eating and drinking.

2. I used different line thicknesses to give the grape character. I wanted the grape to seem alive and have personality because someone who is epicurean is going to have a personality to them. If the line thickness stayed the same throughout the shape of the grape, then the grape would have no appealing aspect. I drew the grape on paper, then transferred it onto the computer to give it more of a cartoon affect. If the grape was drawn on the computer, it would have a more uptight, cold feeling to it. I didn't want the grape to have this feeling because if this logo were to be put on the product, I would not want the logo to seem cold and unfriendly. The grape is also plump to show that it has indulged in (luxurious) things. Lastly, the shadow of the grape is a crown to show that the grape is (essentially) full of luxurious things.

Kat's Typography Poster- John Lennon

My quote is a famous quote by John Lennon. The general color scheme is indicative as one you would experience in a muted, soft dream. The main focus, the large A, is blurred and fuzzy as if ghostly.

Morgan's logo

1. What was your "word" and its meaning?

-My word was tenuous which means small, weak, or slight.

2. How does your logo use: shapes, values, colors, common experiences, or symbols, to express the meaning of the word?

-My logo is showing two ropes being held together by only one strand.  This strand represents the word tenuous by the fact that the strand is very slight and as the rope keeps coming apart the strand will keep on getting weaker.  I made the logo white and background black to make it stand out.

Brett's Text Poster... yeah, a little late.

1.) The Sky is the Limit
2.) The best part I find is that there is a lot of variety in color.
3.) The Limitations stay in the atmosphere of what you could infer to be earth and the words break out of those limitations into the endless space.

Sarah's Torrid

1. What was your "word" and it's meaning?

My word is "Torrid". "Torrid" means subject to parking or burning heat especially of the sun, as a geographical area.

2. How does your logo use: shapes, values, colors, common experiences or symbols to express the meaning of the word?

My logo is a simple circular cactus that has black as its main color, implying that its burnt. The border of the cactus is bright orange and the small flames are in warm colors, emphasizing the heat of the image. I chose a cactus because a cactus is a plant that grows in the hot desert. The cactus's cartoon "dead" emphasizes "torrid" because it was so hot even a cactus burned up and died. Most symbols having to do with heat use warm colors.

kelsey-nefarious

1. nefarious; flagrantly wicked or impious
2. my logo is the face of a villainous character and a synonym of nefarious is villainous

Julie's logo

1. Foppish. Affecting extreme elegance in dress and manner.

Sam's Logo

1. What was your "word" and it's meaning?
 Inferno: hell; the infernal regions
2. How does your logo use: shapes, values, colors, common experiences or symbols to express the meaning of the word?
The eye is made of a series of ovals, each with a gradient fill. The inside of the eye depicts flaming skulls which very much so relate to "inferno." It is almost as though the eye is looking in the direction of hell or is becoming hell like.

Sarah's 20x30 Typography Poster

1. What is the name of your poster...
"And it came to me then."

2. What is the best part of the image?
The best part of this image is the boxes that help less visible parts of the quote stand out, and underline the main parts of the quote.

3. How did you make the poster LOOK like what it MEANS? (using color, fonts, effects, values, etc...)
My quote compares the relationships of people to the paths of satellites and stars. I traced a satellite with parts of the quote in it and made small stars on a gradient background with colors you can find in space. The large 'O' in the background looks like a planet. The quote letters mask a picture of stars.

August's type poster

The name of my poster is, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

The best part of this image is the color scheme. The colors flow easily from one to the other, creating a sense of movement. The colors also create a sense of balance throughout the poster and help to evenly distribute a viewer's attention.

I made the poster look like what it literally says by creating a sense of movement with color throughout the poster. Movement is important to this poster because this quote talks about taking a journey/ moving on in life. The colors in this poster are also contrasting and bright. This conveys a kind of "cheery" emotion. This relates to the quote because the quote is inspiring, not depressing. If the quote were sad, or coming from a dark place, the color scheme would be dull, cool colors instead.

Madyson Ballou's Typography Poster

The title of my poster is Help. The best part of my poster is the image inside my focal point. I made the image into a mask of the world help, and the image inside is of a man on the street holding a sign that says "God Bless."Since my poster is about helping and praying and to always remember that life goes on even when you feel like it couldn't get worse. The gradient in the background shows it going from dark to light which enforces the point of things always moving forward and to just never give up.

morgan's typography poster

1. The name of my poster is Fearless because the poster is about having no fear and to just take the path that you're meant to take.  It may be hard at first, but you'll always get through.

2. I think the best part of the image is the star because it kind of represents the north star and how whenever you're lost all you have to do is look at that star in the sky and follow the path towards it.

3. I made the poster look like how it means by having really bright/vibrant colors because if something is fearful then it hides itself, while bright colors stand out representing fearless.  I also made the effect of the words no fear stand out because that's one of the main themes of the poster.

Jen's Typography Poster

The name to my poster is: "It is Better to Light One Candle Than to Curse the Darkness".

The best part of my poster is definitely the candle, itself. It contrasts heavily with the background. Also, because the flame is within an area of whitespace, it draws the eye to that spot. The quote, or Chinese Proverb, that inspired the poster is the most visible within the candle. Because the candle uses both English and Chinese characters, it is a nice blend of the two languages.

I believe that my poster highly relates to the quote itself. Not only is a candle the focal point of the image, the colors that surround the candle grow progressively darker. This suggests that the candle is truly lighting the darkness. Also, the blurred fonts that I used behind heavier fonts suggest glowing. All of the text interacts differently, perhaps to show that anyone is able to make their own light (the way that they light the darkness is different than anyone else).

Hannah Richman's Awesometastic Quote Poster!

1. What is the name of your poster...
The name of my poster is "Your Identity Can Be What You Want It To Be"

2. What is the best part of the image?
The best part of the image is the use of the image. I made the image into a mask of words composed of the quote I choose. Also it flows together as a whole, making it look like the women in the poster is saying the quote.

3. How did you make the poster LOOK like what it MEANS? (using color, fonts, effects, values, etc...)
I made the quote is about identity so it makes sense to use a person as one of the main focal points in the picture. Having the quote be in all different text makes it look like others are saying the quote along with her, giving the sense that anyone can be how they want to be. The colors are a solum tone to make the quote stand out, along with her lips to show that she is the one saying the quote.

Hannah's Poster

The name of my poster is "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something is more important than fear."

The best part of the image is the many layers. Nearly every line of text has multiple layers to it, really giving a sense of depth, and drawing in the viewers attention. The words that stand out such as "The judgement" have glows behind them, so they stand out and also have bright colors which contrast with the background. To make the poster look like what it means I used the contrast between day and night. The night is something that many people are afraid of, while daytime is considered better. I therefore made fear using a picture of stars to show this, and other text with a scene from the daytime to show courage.

Sam's Poster

1)Name: Dreaming
2) I think that the best part of the poster is the color scheme. I really like the warm, opaque colors.
3) I tried to use value to display the meaning of the quote. It goes from very light colors to darker ones at the bottom. The more critical words, like "dreams" or "pursue" are in all capital letters.
