GRID POSTER EVALUATION

Post an image of your "Design research grid poster", and discuss the following topics:

• How does your poster "look" like the artist's style? Describe what is unique about their use of the elements and principals....

• What was the type of grid you used ( rule of thirds, asymmetrical, columns, baseline, or your own)?

• What object in your poster "breaks off" the grid?

• How did you lead the viewer through your design? Did you use changes in size, color, contrast, texture, shape....

• What is the most successful part of your design?

WORKING WITH A GRID....

Designers often create a visual "grid" to organize information. Type and images can "hang" on the grid lines, even if the grid is invisible in the printed image.

Your Design Research Poster must show your understanding and use of a grid structure.

Here are some links to more info on grids and samples of grid layouts...

Waaaay Outside The Box

Let me get your creativity going with several "quick" Typography design problems....

Post images solving each of these tasks to your blog and explain how yours is a good solution....

1. Create an image of type using cast shadows and light....

2. Create an image showing type using distortion in a reflection...

3. Create an image showing type
--> installed as a three dimensional letter form in a space

4. Create an image showing type made out of non-traditional materials

5. Create an image showing type drawn with non traditional tools (sponge, branches, etc.)

Wanna Design a T-Shirt?

Here is the information from Mrs. Rice about the group.....

Your design should reflect these ideas with symbols, shapes, letters, numbers, etc.

She says, "we would like the logo to include the following in some way:

EYW
Empowering Young Woman
Woodstock Academy

The program is focused on building confidence and connections through experience. We engage in a variety of experiences so that the members are able to be exposed to new and different things. In addition, we have a community service goal as well. we address issues that are facing young women and simply provide a safe and comfortable place for them to grow, learn, share and have fun!"

new test

I was using the "Mosaic" filter to get some of the pixels to seem larger..

Mess With The Web, project

Here is a quick project to challenge you to be creative and take risks with your work....

Create several images to be displayed on you blog- not to be printed..

Make your design respond to these attributes of the web and blogs:

1.  SCROLLING- your work should use the scrolling as an important part of the layout of your image.

2. PIXELS- manipulate the idea that your work is displayed by a collection of DOTS and marks..... what if you enlarged those pixels?

3. CLARITY against things that are HIDDEN... thin about how fog hides information..

4. CHANGE- make your design change as the viewer scrolls through to see it. How can the change help the message of the work come through?

SKILLS to use:

Work in Photoshop for the best results.... 72 dpi resolution

Work with the "Mosaic" filter to get a pixelated effect..

Another Test

This one is 12" X36"

72 dpi resolution

Uploaded and set to "original size"

let's see how it works......

Mess With The Web

Here's the link @ http://wawacdesign.blogspot.com/2012/03/experiment.html

Create a design that manipulates the scrolling effect of the blog's layout....

Use at least three of the Elements of Design in creating your work....

Also! Manipulate the idea of RESOLUTION and "Clarity" in your work..... think of how fog makes things see to vanish.....

A Quick Design Challenge

Design a logo for the plastics team....

Here's the info for that:

"Our company name is Jupiter Power and we were hoping the logo could include a lightning bolt, the Jupiter planet symbol and our company name. We wanted the lightning bolt to probably be yellow and orange and then have a black background and white letters and symbol. However, it is mainly up to you and your class.

Thank you so much

Posting the Modulated Paper design project....

Post your design as a flat pattern and take a photo of the folded design....

Show how your design enhances, or hides the folding...

Write answers to these questions too:

• How did you use the elements of Art (line, color, pattern, visual texture, shapes, values) to enhance or hide the folding?

• What is your audience supposed to think of the design? What "clues" have you give them to make them think that?

Good work!

Juxtapose With Photoshop

Here's a quick, yet interesting design challenge:

Combine two images using Photoshop to create a dynamic visual effect (exciting, calm, etc.)

Use these Photoshop tools:

Rectangular selection tool (marque tool)
Select by color range, or with the magic wand...
Adjustment Layers
Layer Masks
Import  Illustrator files into Photoshop to select..

Use these Design Skills

Visual impact of juxtaposing images- making it exciting, boring or other…

Shape of the image “slices”
Frequency of the slices
Contrast – value and color changes

Use these keyboard shortcuts:

Shift to drag in alignment
option- click and drag to duplicate

Use these "Guiding Questions"...

1. How can I use COLOR and VALUE to create an emotional reaction in my audience?

2. What selection SHAPES will best relate to, or react with the image I chose?

3. How can I have a FOCAL POINT in all this visual craziness?

GETTING IDEAS - three designers..

Here are three designers who use the ELEMENTS and PRINCIPALS of art in unique ways to convey a message. Notice how their work often has more meaning than what you see on the "surface".

Dig in and explore their work:

Please collect three sample images of their work on your blog page, and answer these questions about them....

1. What is the dominant Element or Principal used in the sample you collected?

2. What is the "deeper meaning" you realize after investigating that artist's work?

THE ARTISTS

Shepard Fairey

The iconic grafitti artist who used the street to spread his message. Look how he adapts images from Communist propaganda, wrestling, pop culture or other "universal" images into his work....

See more of his work here@ http://www.obeygiant.com/industries

He is most famous for his "Andre the giant"  stickers and posters. An image taken from an early 80's pro wrestler's portrait...

Later work picked up on cultural patterns and symbols combined with short statements...

MILTON GLASER

Old school Design master!!! Most of his work is hand made...pre-computers! As a result, you see the "human" influence in his shapes, colors and marks.
Yes, he designed the "Dylan poster" and other icons of graphic design..

See more here @ http://www.miltonglaser.com/store/c:posters/

AESTHETIC APPARATUS

Great "punk rock" designers! They create posters using a mix of old and new- Silk screen printing + mod technology. Love their layered images and the VISUAL TEXTURE!!!

Scanner Dreams

Create an image that visually describes DEPTH and VISUAL TEXTURE, by scanning objects....including your face.

* manipulate the scanner's depth of field, by placing objects close and far from the glass.

* Manipulate the scanner's recording process, by MOVING the scanned objects as they are being scanned!

* Enhance the scanned image by using Photoshoop's "auto tone/contrast/color" tools...

Upload jpegs of your scans to your blog. and answer these questions about the work:

1. What is the mood of your image? Is it a result of: contrast, subject matter, depth of field or the figure to ground relationship?

2. What makes the illusion of depth? Value changes, edge quality, or size of objects?

Here are some examples of scans

Here is the result of using "auto tone" on the image above...

Posting the Letters

Answer these questions about your card, envelope and stationary designs....

1. How do these designs show your use of the elements of art and the principals of design to relate to your THEME?

2. How do the three designs relate and respond to each other? Do they show change? Do they share a common shape, color or texture?

Here's another interesting example of designers taking risks and being creative.... Check out this video documenting the HUSH designers creating artwork, by using recordings of "wishes" to manipulate paints floating in water!!!! They then mailed them to clients as holiday gifts..... and good advertising!!!
