Modulated Surface Project (patterns + surface = wow)

How could you use patterns and designs to increase the effect of folding and shaping a sheet of paper until it becomes a 3D sculpture?

Your task:  Decorate a letter sized paper using any techniques- color or black and white- that will accentuate any folding, cutting and curving of the paper.

Design, print, then cut, fold and glue it down to "hold" the new shape.

Here is the handout,

Take a look at Richard Sweeney's site to see some examples of folding, and surface decorations...

Here are some other ideas for cutting paper to make it "react" to pulling and shaping.
These are from RISD Sophomore Jessica Luscher's web site.... link.

BRAINSTORMING!

Let's use this technique to create and organize our thoughts about a creative topic. You can see an example of a hand drawn brainstorm here....

These kids chose a THEME and developed ideas from that source topic. Notice how they wrote down all kinds of ideas that literally "branch" off of other ideas = a "storm" of ideas.

These images are from another teacher's blog, see more of her classes blogs here...

Response to Japan Project

Lets create an object or series of objects in reaction to the tragedy in Japan. The unifying element in the design will be the shape of an origami crane- from the story of 1,000 cranes. Your challenge as a designer is to apply other aspects of the Japanese culture to the format of the crane to create an art object showing compassion and support for the Japanese people.
Some areas to start with are:

Japanese Kimonos... the folding pattern is interesting too... a link is  here

Take a look at this quick link to see more about origami cranes....and this link to build one.

We could also include references to the art forms of flower arrangement, or "ikebana". Here is a link for information...
Also the rich paintings of Hirosige
see more at this link...

Here is the Crest design for Japan. It has an interesting (and symbolic) use of a 5-7-5 pattern... Here is a link to more info on Japanese "crests"...

Some animation effects and ideas...

Look at some techniques that film makers use to create an emotional reaction in their audience...

Here's one example of the use of slow movement and cool colors...

Here's the classic Twilight Zone (1960's TV show) intro... a great example how to make a Creepy mood...

Here's the 1985 remake of the same movie (intro)...
